Shaw Woods

Old growth Sugar Maple at Shaw Woods

The Shaw Woods Outdoor Education Centre is a 210 hectare property in Cobden north of Eganville that consists of wetlands, mixed forest, and a magnificent lookout over Shaw’s Pond where Bald Eagles nest.  Shaw Woods is distinguished by its 50 hectares of old growth forest with Sugar Maple, Beech, Yellow Birch, and a Hemlock grove with trees 30m in height.  Interestingly, there are no White Pine in the old growth area on the west side of the property, yet the east side hosts many large White Pine.

Shaw Woods is open to the public and can be accessed from its parking lot at 2065 Bulger Road.  Its 14 km of trails are described in excellent trail guides that can be downloaded from the web site or picked up at the trailheads.
